How can I take preventive measures against Alzheimer’s at a young age and prevent memory loss in general?
My Grandmother was a brilliant, strong woman and she is now suffering from Alzheimer’s. My mother, who is in her forties and has always been a bit forgetful, has recently been getting more forgetful. I, too, am forgetful. I leave my keys in my car, can’t remember where I put my purse, etc.
I would like to know what I can do to stay brain-healthy for the longest possible time. Thanks for your answers.

Some things about Alzheimer’s are hereditary. However, there are things you can do to minimize the possibility of getting the disease. In general, the more stimulation you give your brain and the more connections your brain makes, the better. Some of the things that are especially good are: speaking a foreign language, doing cross-word puzzles, doing anything mental/challenging. For example, it was shown that speaking a second language can delay the onset of Alzheimer’s for up to four years! Doing crossword puzzles releases an enzyme in your brain which is like an anti-Alzheimer’s drug. Change your routine — drive to work with a different route from time to time. The more things you can do to stimulate your brain, the better off you are. In addition, your life will be fuller and more fun. Good luck to you!
Diet. Watch your diet. Be sure to eat a vaiety of fruits and vegetables. Eat a diet rich in antioxidents and omega-3. Excercise your body and keep your mind active, always learning new things.
You can’t; it’s genetic and we all are going to suffer some type of memory loss as we get older. Even the medication that is given will not stop it; it just slows the progression a bit.
I’m not sure if this still holds true, but there IS something you can do.
Some recent studies found a corrolation between Alzhiemer’s and aluminum! Aluminum just happens to be the main ingredient in ALOT of deoderants. After learning this, I went out at bought Thomas of Maine’s - a great brand, and all-natural ingredients! Also, make sure your family is using fairly new pots and pans that don’t leave behind any metallic residue.
Although some of this stuff might sound like a stretch, there’s no way it could hurt to try!
My dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in his early 60’s. He’s part of a research study for a new treatment and I asked the doctor in charge this very question.
He said to keep your mind & body active and eat fish.
I hate fish but I’ve been doing the other things. The more pathways you have built in your brain (from learning new things, especially new physical things like yoga or anything requiring a lot of coordination), the longer it will take the disease to manifest. It’s not perfect of course.
PS the aluminum connection has been disproved: http://www.alzheimers.org.uk/Facts_about_dementia/Risk_factors/info_aluminium.htm
