Self-help Book Teaches Old Lady Some New Tricks!

Helen was extremely old-fashioned. She was so set in her ways that her children and even grandchildren teased her about it. You know those old rotary phones that you have to dial by sticking your finger into a little wheel and spinning it around? Helen still used one! And she still used a record player from the 50s to listen to music! Helen’s family and friends would joke about her probably having a horse and buggy in the garage to get to the grocery store. 86

After all, Helen was 83 years old. Like most people her age, she was resistant to change … and after all, if her old appliances and record players and phones still worked, why waste money on new gadgets and things she may not understand or know how to use anyway? 49

Helen was discussing her old-fashioned ways with one of her friends down the street in the senior community in which she lived. The friend told her that it is healthy for seniors to try to learn new things, because it challenges the brain and prevents Alzheimer’s disease. Learning new things is good for anyone, but especially the elderly, the friend told her. 64

So Helen went to the library and borrowed an audio book on how to learn to use a computer. The librarian set her up with a stereo and headphones and sat her down at one of the computer stations. It took her several hours, but Helen finally was able to accomplish the first task – she successfully sent her daughter an e-mail!

“This wasn’t so bad,” Helen thought to herself! After that, Helen finally got the courage to buy a cordless phone and even a CD player for her home! One simple audio book helped Helen become a hip grandma!
