Alzheimers disease (AD) is a critical health care problem that has considerable social and economic impact on society. Effective treatments have been elusive. One major causal factor for the disease is believed to be the deposition of amyloid fibrils in the brain, which ultimately leads to neurodegeneration and cognitive dysfunction. Based on the amyloid hypothesis of Alzheimers disease, many therapies presently target the amyloid beta (A?) peptide, the monomeric protein fragment that assembles to form fibrils.
